Time to dust off those pencil skirts and sailor shorts.

The Moores Memorial Library is preparing for a unique new fundraiser, a "Rockin' '50s Dance Night" at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., on Friday, Sept. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30, and attendees are asked to bring out their best '50s-inspired outfit.

"Poodle skirts is what I would think of," said Karen Woods, one of the organizers of the event. "Bright colors. I know we're doing the pinks and the blues."

The highlight of the event will be Elvis Presley impersonator Jeff Krick, who will perform Elvis hits such as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," as well as classic country and soft rock favorites. In the lead-up to the event, there's a cardboard cutout of Presley in the library's lobby; the cutout and Krick will be available for photo-ops at the event.

"He's all over the country," Woods said of Krick. "He's reputed to be very, very good. ... A couple of the people coming know of him and have seen him before, so they were very excited."

An admission fee will be charged for the event; attendees who go as a couple can get a slightly reduced price. Tickets can be purchased at the library; cash, check or Venmo will be accepted. The library asked that attendees purchase tickets by Saturday, Sept. 5.

The event is limited to those age 18 and up, and no alcohol will be permitted at the event.

A catered meal is included in the cost of attending the event. The meal will provide attendees with the choice of a hamburger or hot dog, along with a platter of sides. Root beer floats will also be available.

Funds raised from the event will go toward keeping the library's programs, particularly its children's programs, free for the whole community to enjoy. Located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, the library offers a STEM club, Lego club and summer reading program, just to name a few. The library also has a special display up for the upcoming Christiana Heritage Days event, which will be showcased on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The library had 62 readers in its summer reading program this year.

"We always have a lot of participation, which is nice," said Kimberly Campbell, one of the event's organizers. "That's (what) the majority of the funds raised go to."

Aside from children-centric events, the library also recently held a movie night. The library is asking the community to come out for one night to support all things it does for the community throughout the year.

"The library is a pillar, especially in this small town," Campbell said. "People come to use the computers, homeschooled kids every fall. It's a very family-friendly library; kids are running around."

Founded in 1881, the library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The library is closed on Sundays.
