Program to Focus on 19th-Century Medicine

Cures, Quackery, and Common Sense: Medicine and Healing in the 1800s" will be the next program in the Conversation Around the Corner speaker series at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster. The program will take place Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Diane Whitcomb, a family nurse practitioner with a longtime interest in the history of medicine, will share how people in the 1800s understood illness, the treatments available to them, what they used to treat common ailments, and how medical practices evolved throughout the century. The presentation will include medicinal herbs and their uses, as well as a broader look at the medical practices and beliefs of the era. Whitcomb will bring along fake leeches and an antique pill roller, giving participants an opportunity to see and try the tools and techniques used in 19th-century medicine.

The event is free of charge. The Conversation Around the Corner series aims to bring people together to explore meaningful topics, share ideas, and connect as a community.
