Millersville Borough Slates Veterans Day Ceremony

The 14th annual Millersville Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville. Community members and local organizations will gather at the Millersville Veterans Memorial located in the park to honor current and former members of the military.

In the case of inclement weather, the rain-or-shine event will be held in the park's pavilion. A golf cart provided by Charles F. Snyder Funeral home will offer transportation from the parking lot to the memorial. Light refreshments donated by John Herr's Village Market and Herr's Snacks will be served after the ceremony.

Every year, Millersville Borough invites a different guest speaker to address attendees during the ceremony. This year's guest speaker, Allan Rivard, will give a talk on what Veterans Day means in modern times. Rivard is the program manager for the Army's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the Veterans and Military Resource Center at Millersville University.

The Veterans Day ceremony will include a performance by fifth-grade students from Pequea Elementary School. Samuel Pedersen, president of Millersville University Choirs, will sing the national anthem.

In addition to musical performances and a guest speaker, the patriotic event will feature remarks from Rep. Izzy Smith-Wade-El and Lancaster County Board of Commissioners board members Josh Parsons, Ray D'Agostino and Alice Yoder. The ceremony will also be attended by representatives from the offices of Sen. Scott Martin and Congressman Lloyd Smucker.

Every year, bricks purchased for the memorial's courtyard are dedicated during the ceremony. In recent years, the event has also included a reading of the names of veterans memorialized on the Hometown Heroes Banners placed throughout Millersville.

Members 1st Federal Credit Union will donate a wreath for a memorial wreath-laying service. Local organizations such as the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and the Penn Manor Military Club will participate in the ceremony.

"I think people use the ceremony as a way to reflect on Veterans Day every year," said borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall. "We always get a good turnout, and it's a great opportunity for people to hear different guest speakers and to come together as a community to recognize the importance of the day."
