It's another summer of making a splash at the Millersville Lions Club Pool.

The pool, located at 314 N. Prince St., Millersville, is set to host its annual "Splash Parties" this summer across the months of June, July and August.

The Millersville Lions Club Pool is a membership-based establishment. The splash parties open the pool up to nonmembers, raise money for charity and provide both food and entertainment to those who attend.

The first party of the summer was held on June 17. The second, to be held on Wednesday, July 15, will raise money for Breakthrough T1D, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Last year's June splash party raised $4,000 for Breakthrough T1D. Other events, benefiting organizations like Make-A-Wish America and Aaron's Acres and causes such as autism awareness, have raised even more money, depending on the weather and time of year.

"The motto for the Lions is, 'We serve,'" said membership chairperson Pat Benson. "So it's any way that we can give back to the community."

The pool charges a small fee to enter for splash parties, which is slightly reduced for existing members. Food will be for sale at the facility's snack bar; profits from the snack bar will also be donated to charity.

A third splash party will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, and will benefit autism awareness. Benson said the splash parties usually have around 700 people in attendance. On the day of a splash party, the pool closes at 5 p.m. before reopening for the party at 6 p.m. and eventually closing at 9 p.m.

The parties were discontinued for a period of time, but the current iteration has been running for nearly a decade.

"We'll have a DJ, all kinds of concessions and food, baked goods, cotton candy and snow cones," said Bobbie Frick, marketing and technology chairperson for the Lions.

In a time where many local pools have either closed entirely or seen their quality go downhill, the Lions Club Pool is proud to still offer many amenities to its members. The facility includes a pool, a smaller kiddie pool, a sand pit, a pavilion and hanging rooms. Basketball courts are also nearby.

The pool is typically open from Memorial Day to Labor Day every year.

"I think one of the biggest things that people don't realize is that it's the Lions Club that does this," Benson said. "If we didn't have the members that could do stuff, we couldn't afford to do this. ... All of the stuff that happens around here is all volunteers doing it. We couldn't afford to pay somebody to mow the grass five times a week."

The Millersville Lions Club, which currently has 65 members, meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and run for approximately one hour.

"We're always looking for members," Frick said.
