A New Place for Crafts

A fundraising craft and vendor show to benefit the local chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA) will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the cost of placing wreaths on the graves of veterans at cemeteries in the Pequea Valley, Octorara and Strasburg areas.

This is the third year for the craft show, which was held at the Gap Fire Company last year. This year's show is set to have 30 vendors, an increase from last year's figure of 21.

"We were really out of room (at the fire hall)," said WAA committee member Deb Plum, who plans the event along with Paula Diem. "I'm a small business owner, and I do vendor events, so I know what it's like to be squeezed into a tiny space."

Vendors, who will be set up in the facilities' gymnasium, are asked to pay a registration fee and to donate one item for a random drawing that is held as part of the event. The prize drawing includes gift baskets, as well.

Two of the vendors are bakers, one of which will be selling sourdough items; the other will offer cupcakes and pumpkin rolls.

WAA volunteers place wreaths on the graves of veterans every holiday season to remember and honor those who served in the military. The Pequea Valley Cemeteries chapter alone places over 3,100 wreaths across 32 cemeteries every December.

In addition to the craft show, the chapter holds annual golf outing, bingos and more similar fundraisers. This year, wreaths will be laid locally and nationwide on Saturday, Dec. 19. Locally, the day will begin with an opening ceremony at Pequea Valley Secondary School, 164 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers.

"We have to purchase all the wreaths, so that's quite an undertaking for that many wreaths," Plum said. "We've kind of just grown from when we started."

At the craft show, a 50/50 drawing and gift card drawing is also planned. Vendors will be selling a variety of items, including candles, woodworking items, pet treats, kitchen items and more.

"We have maybe three that are direct sales that don't make their stuff, but the majority are makers," Plum said. "The public can come and support small businesses, start their Christmas shopping and maybe avoid the mall."

With the move to The Factory, attendees to the craft show are asked to bring items to support its food market. Condiments are currently a big need, including mustard, salt, pepper, pickles, olives and other items of that variety.

No ticket is needed to attend the event.
