Bellevue Presbyterian to Offer First Trunk or Treat

Bellevue Presbyterian Church is switching it up this fall.

The church, located at 810 Newport Ave., Gap, has traditionally held a fall festival for the community. This year, the church is switching to a trunk or treat event at the church on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Along with the trunk or treat, the event promises food trucks, as well as plenty of candy and fun.

"It's going to be our first year for the trunk or treat," said event organizer Amanda Doutrich. "We're done fall festivals for the last seven years ... we're hoping to bring families into the church, and (the fall festivals) have not, which is unfortunate. But a lot of people in our area here in Gap, we have a lot of Mennonite Amish, and they already have churches that they go to."

Individuals, organizations and businesses in the community are welcomed to design a festive, themed trunk for the event. The church will provide candy for the trunks, but does ask that those who participate keep their trunks festive and in the spirit of the event. A claw machine will also be at the event.

Participants should be set up by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Those interested should call the church office at 717-442-4077 by Thursday, Oct. 22. Doutrich said that the church is hoping to have at least 20 trunks participate.

Free food from local food trucks is another highlight of the rain-or-shine event. Strasburg-based Skip's Chicken, New Holland-founded Pappy's BBQ, Lancaster Cupcake and Rita's will be in attendance.

When people arrive at the event, they'll get a ticket that will provide them with free food from the food trucks, Doutrich explained.

"We have a nice meal waiting for them," she said. "Either you get pulled pork or brisket, or you get the chicken dish. They'll get a ticket, and then (the food trucks) will tell us at the end how much we owe them."

Attendees at the event are welcomed and encouraged to come in costumes but are asked not to wear masks. Additionally, the church asks that attendees avoid wearing scary costumes. On the day of the event, the trunk or treat will start at 4:30 p.m.; food trucks will arrive around 5 p.m.

Members from the greater community are invited, but those who do not already attend Bellevue Presbyterian are asked to have obtained the state's child abuse history clearances. In the past, the fall festival drew around 300 people, Doutrich said.
