Shop for the Strange and Spooky

Celebrate spooky season by going shopping in the perfect spot for creepy fun. The All Hollow Oddities Market will be held in Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

It will be hosted by Columbia Curiosities and Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery and will feature more than 35 vendors of oddities and antiques, plus a variety of hearses on-site and food and beverages for sale.

"Every purchase at our All Hollow Oddities Market helps preserve a piece of Pennsylvania history," said Jane Moore, president of the board of directors of the cemetery. "This event is more than a day of shopping. It's a fundraiser for the oldest active cemetery in Pennsylvania."

Mount Bethel Cemetery recorded its first burial in 1730. It is the final resting place of many notable figures in Columbia's history, including Susanna Wright and Lloyd Mifflin.

"Every vendor fee goes directly toward maintaining the historic grounds, caring for veterans' graves and helping ensure this beautiful cemetery remains, preserved for future generations," Moore remarked.

The Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery host events throughout the year, including the Last Ride and Macabre Creations Market in conjunction with the Thunder on the River car show in June.

"We also participate in the Wreaths Across America program to honor the 680-plus veterans buried at Mount Bethel," Moore said. "This year, Wreaths Across America is on Dec. 19."

The group has a busy year ahead planned as well. Activities include a tea scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2027. Taking place in the common room of the caretakers' cottage on the cemetery grounds, the event will be hosted by a luminary from the cemetery's past.

On Saturday, June 12, 2027, Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery will host Art in the Gardens. Partnering with Create Columbia for its annual garden tour, the group will showcase progress on its arboretum during the event. Next's year's Last Ride and Macabre Creations will be held on Saturday, June 19, and will feature a display of hearses, flower cars and more, complemented by vendors featuring creepy creations.

The Friends groups will host its annual Fete en Noir fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 10, 2027, when guests are encouraged to dress in black for a picnic event that features live music among the tombstones.

Additional 2027 activities for the group include a Macabre Market on Saturday, Oct. 9, as well as a holiday tea on Saturday, Dec. 4. Next year's Wreaths Across America event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2027.
