Emily Stauffer's Hard Work Pays Off in Big Way

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars is a lot of money; it's a quarter of a million bucks. For Warwick High School senior Emily Stauffer, it could be a life-altering sum of money.

"Honestly, I still don't know why it happened," said Emily. "It's kind of like winning the lottery. Maybe it was one thing I mentioned or one random thing I had done."

Recently, Emily, an outstanding student at Warwick, was awarded a $250,000 Dorsey scholarship to attend McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland. The scholarship will cover all or many of Stauffer's undergraduate expenses, including tuition, books and room and board for four years.

"It is more than generous," said Emily. "As someone who wants to explore medical school, it's a blessing. It's something I never would have expected. It allows me to go through undergrad without the constant worry of paying back my debt."

Stauffer learned of the windfall in surprising fashion. Without being told, she was led to a room at Warwick High School, where representatives of McDaniel College, her parents and high school officials were waiting to drop the news on her.

It hit her like a ton of bricks.

"I was called down to the office at the end of the day, and they took me into this room," remembered Emily. "First, I saw my parents, which kind of took me off guard. When they told me, I was surprised. I was speechless. I started putting two and two together, but I wasn't expecting it. It was an amazing experience all the way around."

Despite navigating an interview process at McDaniel, Emily did not formally apply for the Dorsey scholarship, but she was one of five members of the college's incoming Class of 2030 to earn one. McDaniel was one of the colleges Emily had visited and was considering for her postsecondary education, but the $250,000 scholarship sealed the deal.

"I was still in the process of making up my mind, and when I got the scholarship, I made my final decision," said Emily. "But McDaniel was a great fit for me. It's a tight-knit community there, which is good for my learning style. When I received the scholarship, it felt like it was just meant to be."

The Dorsey scholarship is McDaniel College's merit-based and most prestigious scholarship. The Dorsey Scholarship, which is funded by a gift from 1891 alumnus John Henry Dorsey, is designed to celebrate high-achieving students.

"When I visited, I fell in love with the college," said Emily. "I loved the campus; I loved the professors. It made the most sense for me."

Certainly, Emily's extracurricular activity and academic success at Warwick, as well as her community involvement, all played into receiving the scholarship. Emily has been ranked number one in Warwick's Class of 2026 over the last three years, while maintaining a grade point average around 4.5.

"Warwick has just been like the best high school," said Emily. "I've had amazing experiences with my teachers, especially in the maths and science. We just have a great body of teachers who want to support and lift up students.

"I think it's easy to look at someone's achievements and think they know who they are," she added. "But I think it goes beyond that. Pursuing everything with your heart, I think that's the most important part for me."

Among the possibilities in Emily's wide-open future are studying biochemistry, attending medical school and becoming a gastroenterologist.

"When I was younger, I struggled with a lot of gastroenterology issues," said Emily. "I saw how gastroenterologists helped me. I've been looking into gastroenterology health, and I've continued to be into it. It's not guaranteed in my future, but it's definitely something I'm interested in."
