YCAS schedules special events

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will host two special events in May. All events are open to the public.

YCAS will offer astronomy programs to the public on Saturday, May 6, at the York Learning Center Planetarium, 301 E. Sixth Ave., York. There is an admission fee per show, with a discount for any second or third show.

Programs suitable for young children and families include "One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure" at 2 p.m. and "Defying Gravity: It IS Rocket Science!" at 3:20 p.m. Older viewers are invited to attend "Forward! To the Moon" at 7 p.m. and "Hot and Energetic Universe" at 8:20 p.m. StarWatch will be shown at 2:40 and 7:40 p.m. and is suitable for all audiences.

YCAS will host a public Starwatch at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, May 13, from 8 to 10 p.m. The event is free, but donations will be accepted.

The event will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on the James Webb Space Telescope's first images and other current astronomy topics. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky through one of the club's telescopes. Attendees will be shown a host of celestial objects.

Visitors are also invited to bring their own telescopes to receive assistance with using them. YCAS members will be on hand to answer questions.

If the weather is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, call 717-759-9227 for notice of cancellation.
