Wrestlers Attend Rubicon Wrestling Camp

Solanco head coach Tony Mendez and his staff conducted a Rubicon Wrestling Camp for elementary through high school wrestlers from June 13 to 15 at the high school wrestling room.

The elementary camp provided an introductory-level, hands-on teaching of fundamental skills and techniques that are the building blocks to success in the sport. The camp ran from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Featured clinicians included Bobby Ream, a Penn Manor and Lock Haven University graduate, and Dom Flatt, a Solanco and Millersville University graduate.

The high school and junior high camp ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and included techniques, live wrestling, cross-fit training, goal setting and personal development as well as an opportunity to work with current NCAA Division I wrestlers and coaches. A combined total of 68 wrestlers attended.

"I work with the kids all season, so it's good for them to hear things from someone else," said Mendez. "These coaches know the latest and greatest of what the college level is teaching."

Camp speakers included, for the sixth year, Dan Neff and Ronnie Perry. Neff is Solanco's first PIAA state champion. He is an NCAA All-American, a four-time NCAA Division I qualifier and a Navy university assistant coach. Perry, a 2013 Solanco graduate, was a PIAA seventh-place finisher, a 2018 NCAA runner-up and a three-time NCAA Division I qualifier. He is a Lock Haven University (LHU) assistant coach and the LHU somen's head coach. Ben Barton, an LHU NCAA qualifier, also attended.
