World War II Veteran To Speak To Club

The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at a new location, VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.

The club will host Charles Brooking, who served as a PT boat machine gunner in the Pacific. With his father's permission, Brooking enlisted in the Navy when he was 17. He saw combat duty near the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal, and during World War II, he manned twin .50 caliber machine guns on PT-223, PT-619, PT-621, and PT-617 boats. He served two years active/combat service and later eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Now 95 years old, he resides in Bloomsburg.

The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of each month except December. All World War II veterans and family and anyone with an interest in WWII history are invited to attend.
