World War II pilot to speak

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will host Edwin Cottrell as the speaker on Tuesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.

Cottrell's military career began while he was a college sophomore. The U.S. government offered a college pilot training program, through which Cottrell received his pilot's license. With a pilot's license and a draft notice in August 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps. His unit went to Europe and was sent to various countries as the war continued. He piloted a P-47 and was designated the lead pilot of his unit during the Battle of the Bulge. Cottrell celebrated his 102nd birthday this year.
