With Mickey's Black Box, Rock Lititz puts its best foot forward

Fitted with incredible workspaces and cutting-edge technology, Rock Lititz is a place where world-famous artists come to fine-tune their acts. Due to the nature of that work, the public is not privy to everything that goes on at Rock Lititz.

But that's where Mickey's Black Box comes in. Of all the businesses that are open to the public there, few represent what Rock Lititz is all about more than Mickey's Black Box.

Named for Australian Michael "Mickey" Tait, who helped Rock Lititz founders and brothers Roy and Gene Clair take their live-performance endeavor to new heights with his innovative staging and lighting techniques, Mickey's Black Box is a world-class venue that's offered to the public. Also available to the public at Rock Lititz, 100 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, are Per Diem restaurant, Fetish Brewing Company, Hotel Rock Lititz and Lititz recROC.

"I know there's a lot of mystique surrounding the Rock Lititz campus," said Mickey's Black Box director of events and logistics Margaret Cooper. "When people come on campus, they think there are a lot of things going on here. The amount of good will that people have on this project is just so amazing. The longtime Lititz locals seem very grateful to have Rock Lititz as a neighbor. To some there's still a little bit of lore around it."

Developed by the Clair brothers, the 96-acre Rock Lititz campus is home to more than 30 businesses. The 30,000-square-foot Rock Lititz was established in 2014.

Over the last nine years, Rock Lititz has continued to evolve and grow. In 2018, Hotel Rock Lititz was opened to provide overnight lodging for visitors.

In some ways, the mission at Mickey's Black Box is to connect Rock Lititz with the Lititz and Lancaster communities. The flexible venue, which debuted in 2021, possesses the ability to accommodate 350 to 600 guests for concerts, stage shows, private celebrations, meetings and even weddings.

On the average, Mickey's Black Box hosts between two and four events each week.

"Quite simply, Mickey's Black Box is an event space," said Cooper. "The intention is to create a home for acts that are traditionally underappreciated. We're all businesses that share space on the campus together. We provide space for up-and-coming talent to hone their skills. But we also want to be a community fixture."

In the early 1960s, the Clair brothers, who are Lititz natives, put their passion for sound to good use at local dances and sporting events. Their big break came in 1966 when they were hired by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons to produce sound for a concert at Franklin & Marshall College.

To meet an increasing need for rehearsal space in the live-event industry, the Clair brothers purchased and developed 4,000 square feet of a factory building in Lititz, equipping it with world-class sound equipment and Tait's creative staging and lighting techniques. Billy Joel was their first client.

"Because we're so versatile and have so much going on, you've really got to see it for yourself," said Cooper. "It's very unique. We are a venue that far exceeds its own needs as far as compatibility goes. That's awesome to have in your own backyard."
