Winter Parks Programs Set

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, unless noted otherwise, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Winter Trees and Wildflower Walks, a program for people of all ages, will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow on Saturday, Feb. 6, and Tuesday, Feb. 16. Participants will join a naturalist for a walk in the wildflower meadow and along the creek to enjoy the wildflowers in their final beauty and the trees as they get ready to leaf out. Participants will learn to identify trees with no leaves by the buds, bark, and branches. Attendees should meet at the ballfield 1 parking lot at 539 Golf Road, Lancaster.

Weekend Laboratory: Plant Science will be held at pavilion 22 on Sunday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for teens ages 12 to 17. A naturalist will share information about plants, what makes them unique, and some of their adaptations. Adults must sign release forms as they drop off students for the program. Space is limited.

Munchkin Science: Egg Box Mobile will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. A naturalist will lead the children on a hike to collect anything that catches their interest and fits in their egg cartons. Upon returning to the Environmental Center forebay, children, with the help of their adults, will put together mobiles with their collected items. Children will take the mobiles home to hang in special places. The program is geared for children ages 3 to 5, but siblings are welcome.

Tweens and Teens: Egg Drop, for youths age 11 and up, will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the County Park's Pavilion 22, 1101 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster. Participants will learn some basic physics before designing a vessel for their egg to protect it from a 10-foot drop to concrete. If time allows after the first drop, participants will be able to make improvements to their vessel for a second drop.

Who's Out There? will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. for people age 5 and up. Attendees will join a naturalist on a hike along the Mill Creek Trail to search for tracks and discover who made them.

Homeschool Wednesday: Insects in Winter, for youths ages 8 to 12, will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Attendees will search for evidence of overwintering insects and explore the various ways insects survive the cold. They should plan for outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
