Winter Activity Schedule Posted

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event unless otherwise stated. A 3-mile Cabin Fever Hike will be offered at Speedwell Forge County Park, 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, for individuals age 5 and older. Participants are reminded to dress for the weather.

Nature's Valentine for people of all ages will be held on Sunday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will take a brisk walk around Central Park to collect materials to make unique Valentine's Day greetings. They may bring dried flowers, seeds, and other special items from home to supplement materials from the park collection. Attendees should dress for a cold weather walk followed by craft time.

Snowflake Science will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 7. A naturalist will explore the beauty and mystery of snowflakes during this program for people of all ages.

Munchkin Science: Winter Hike will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. Children ages 3 to 5 will search for animals and their signs as they hike along the Scout Trail on the way to Mill Creek, collecting natural items to throw into the water. Participants will enjoy a running race on the flood plain, and, weather permitting, some snowy activities may be available.

Homeschool Wednesday: Snows, Tundras, and More! will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, to homeschool students ages 8 to 12. Students will discover the motivations and challenges involved in the mass movement of snow geese, tundra swans, and ducks toward breeding grounds farther north. A follow-up program on Friday, Feb. 25, may allow for viewing of this phenomenon. Attendees should wear old clothes and plan for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome, if accompanying older siblings.

Jump Into STEM: Sink or Float? will be offered for 3- to 5-year-olds on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschool scientists will predict if various natural items will be buoyant, then do a series of experiments to test their theories.
