Volleyball Team Opens With Three Straight Wins

The start of a new school year brings with it a new season of high school sports and the uncertainty of a fresh start. For the Conestoga Valley girls' volleyball team that uncertainty has given way to confidence that comes with a 3-0 start.

CV kicked off their 2022 campaign on August 30th, sweeping Northeastern 25-10, 25-13 and 25-13 to earn the 3-0 win. The Lady 'Bucks added another sweep on September 6th, this one over Warwick, via scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21. In between CV slipped by Wilson on September 1st, using a 15-11 game five win to secure the match. Conestoga Valley claimed the opening game 25-18 and bounced back after Wilson's 25-18 game two victory with a 25-23 game three win. Wilson's 25-17 game four win set up the do or die fifth game that went to CV.

TENNIS

The Lady Buckskin tennis team came out of the gate with a flurry of activity leading to a 2-4 mark. CV kicked off the season on August 26th by topping Cocalico 4-3 then added a 7-0 sweep over Solanco on the 31st. In between was a 4-3 setback to Lampeter-Strasburg on the 29th. Flipping the calendar to September, CV fell to Altoona on the 1st, to Manheim Central on the 2nd and to Manheim Township on the 6th.

Jade Flores accounted for the lone win against Central and along with Paula Valverde accounted for the wins opposite Altoona. CV saw their match with Township cut to just four matches due to weather with the Lady Streaks taking all three doubles matches and one singles bout before the rain started.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team has gone the one step forward, one step back route to kick off their 2022 season. That dance started on August 27th with a 4-1 loss to Northern York. CV followed with another 4-1 final, this one a win over Donegal on the 29th. A second loss, this one in overtime, came on the 31st with Central Dauphin posting a 3-2 win despite fourth quarter goals from Alaina Colbert and Jamie Handwerger and 12 Elizabeth Tolley saves.

Conestoga Valley picked up their second victory on September 2nd, rolling Muhlenberg by a 6-0 final. Tolley needed one save to earn the win while Colbert picked up another fourth quarter score. Sophia Livingston also netted a final period score, but it was Mikyla Rineer leading the way with three goals. Handwerger added to Rineer's second quarter tally to finish the offense.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross-country team kicked off their season on September 6th with a trip to Lebanon to face the Cedars. The girls' claimed the top six spots on their way to a 15-50 victory while the boys' team secured five of the top seven places to grab a 24-31 win.

Seana Dougherty, Abigail Zook, Abigail Phillips, Bellemarie Alston, A. Hershey and Sadie Haldeman recorded the top times for the girls.

Timothy Gitonga's second place finish was tops for the boys. Carson Miller, Joshua Yoder, Joseph Castronova and Micah Kao secured the fourth through seventh places respectively to secure the win.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The girls' soccer team has come out of the gate hot, ripping off three wins to start the season before falling by a 3-0 final to Governor Mifflin on September 2nd. CV opened their season on August 26th, topping Donegal by a 2-1 final thanks to the work of McKenna Scott (2g) and Mae Linder (2a) coupled with 10 Gabby Moore saves.

Conestoga Valley welcomed Exeter Township on the 29th and promptly sent them home with a 4-2 loss. Leah Buch netted three of the four goals and set up Gabriella Neiman's first half score as well to lead the way. Moore finished with seven saves.

The Lady Buckskins closed out August with a 3-1 victory over Schuylkill Valley. Moore needed just four saves to post the win with Buch scoring two goals and assisting on Scott's first half goal that made it 2-0.

BOYS' SOCCER

The boys' soccer team has been just as hot on the pitch, jumping out to a 2-1 mark with the lone loss coming to Lower Dauphin on August 30th by a 2-1 final. CV opened the season a few days prior, knocking off Lancaster Mennonite 1-0 thanks to David Irwin's overtime score.

Conestoga Valley bounced back from the LD loss in a big way, topping Exeter Township 6-1 on September 1st. Thabo Lautsbaugh led the way with two goals and one assist while getting help from Landon Sunday and his one goal, two assist game. Nate Showvaker, Jason Burkholder and Caden Bredeman finished the scoring while Jacob Carr and Trevor Forney split time in goal to share the win.

GOLF

The golf team sits halfway through their 2022 season with the L-L championship, set for September 26th, coming into focus on the horizon. The Buckskins hold a 5-7 record after starting the season with matching 1-3 marks at both Overlook and Sunset.

The Bucks turned things around for their final match of August, posting a 3-1 mark at Tanglewood on the 25th. Carson Hoover's 77 was the third lowest score of the day and teammate A. Shiner was one stroke behind. Luke Landis (86) and Thomas Kowalski (88) rounded out the counters.

FOOTBALL

Over on the gridiron, the Buckskins sit at 1-1 in the early going, kicking off the season on August 26th, with a 27-13 loss to Penn Manor. They followed with a 42-7 drubbing of Daniel Boone on September 2nd using a power run game to send the Blazers home defeated. That run game posted 297 yards and accounted for five of the six Conestoga Valley touchdowns.

Zach Phy got the party rolling with a 35-yard first quarter score, but it was Nick Tran that made the offense go. The senior back scored on runs of 25 and 44 yards, finishing with a game high 173 yards on 18 carries. Jeff Fisher picked up the final score, hauling in a 29-yard pass from Macoy Kneisley to cap the first half scoring at 21-7.
