Volleyball Team Battles Top Teams in Section One
After an extremely successful early season boasting four victories, the Lady Bucks suffered a pair of tough mid-season losses against the top teams in Section One, Hempfield and Manheim Township.
On the 28th, CV put up a strong fight against Township falling 3-1. With the exception of a solitary loss to Hempfield, the Blue Streaks have otherwise blanked all of their opponents until they faced CV who took game three in last Tuesday's match (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13).
Becca Hartranft was a force in the contest racking up 16 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces. Summer Getz partnered in the attack and provided 31 assists. Bolstering the defense was Camdyn Mahler's five blocks.
In the 3-0 loss to undefeated Hempfield on the 23rd, the CV squad was unable to grab a game, but Rhiannon Henry dished a pair of aces in addition to providing 14 digs. Getz put up seven assists, Hartranft powered six kills, and Mahler supplied a pair of blocks.
BOYS' SOCCER
CV earned a couple of league triumphs last week, topping Warwick and Cedar Crest in their recent pairings, giving them a 3-3-1 record in LL Section One matchups.
On the 28th, the Bucks outlasted the Warriors 1-0 in an overtime win at home. Shots on goal were infrequent during regulation with CV's keeper Luke Snader grabbing up one save to preserve the shutout.
The CV offensive success came nine minutes into overtime when Nate Showvaker, assisted by Caden Wagner, made good on one of just four total shots on goal to net the golden goal.
"The Warwick result was a huge moment for our team," celebrated head coach Dave Hartlaub. He went on to point out that the club, "showed some growth and maturity that we hope to build off of in the coming games."
The Bucks picked up another league victory on September 22nd with a resounding 4-1 win over Cedar Crest. Caden Wagner scored twice, while Landen Sunday and Thabo Lautsbaugh each tallied a CV goal.
FIELD HOCKEY
The Lady Bucks rolled over two of their last three league opponents, shutting out both Ephrata and Cedar Crest before surrendering a one-goal loss to Hempfield.
At Hempfield on the 29th, the Black Knights were able to slip a goal in during the second quarter and hand the Bucks a 1-0 loss.
The night before, CV hosted Ephrata and blanked the Mountaineers 3-0. The Buckskin offense was relentless, outshooting Ephrata 18-2 in the attack, but were not able to put the ball in the cage until a second quarter success by Lillian Buckwalter.
The scoreboard read 1-0 until the fourth quarter when CV's Sydney Weaver notched a pair of back-to-back goals to give CV a comfortable cushion to run out the clock. Camille Weaver supplied two assists and keeper Allyson Stauffer grabbed a pair of saves to preserve the shutout.
"We started working harder to get quicker shots, shoot off the pads, and not give up until the ball is in the cage," pointed out coach Kelly Dearolf.
On the 23rd, the Buckskins ran away with a 6-0 triumph on a trip to Cedar Crest. With 30 shots on goal and 14 corners, CV gave the Falcons no chance to regain their footing.
Alaina Culbert (2g, 1 a) and Sophia Hess (2 g) led the scoring surge. S. Weaver added both a goal and an assist, Ellie Hershey scored once, Sophia Livingston had three assists, and Xiomara Ruesta added one assist.
FOOTBALL
Buckskin football took a trip to McCaskey on the 24th of September and returned home as the victors by a margin of 35-7.
Both teams visited the endzone in the first quarter, but the remaining three quarters belonged entirely to the Bucks as they pulled away with four more TDs.
Nick Tran had a busy day, running in three CV touchdowns, amassing 150 rushing yards of the team total of 222.
Quarterback Macoy Kneisley (73 passing yards) found Jaiyell Plowden in the end zone on a 14-yard pass for a completion in the second, and Tyler Klopp ran in CV's final touchdown in the fourth.
Kicker Jaden Walker came through in a five-of-five PAT performance for the Bucks.
GOLF
Carson Hoover carded CV's best score with an 89 at the 2021 L-L League Championship which was held on September 27th at Honeybrook Golf Course.
The junior's performance on the 70-par course was enough to place him in a tied 43rd place of nearly 100 participants. Teammate Myles Jackson finished just two strokes behind with a 91 to land in a tie for 49th place.
TENNIS
A mixed bag of results marked CV's last week of the regular schedule, with a 4-3 nonleague loss to Cocalico and a win over Penn Manor by the same score.
Last Wednesday Jenna Rychener, Keyshla Baez, and Savanna Burkholder, with singles successes, earned CV's three points in the loss to Cocalico.
On the 27th, CV gained the edge over Penn Manor 4-3 to pick up a win in their last league matchup.
Baez, Burkholder, and Nicole Fidler strung together the three singles points needed after Ella Turoczi and Natalie Hoover earned the only CV doubles win.
In a 6-1 loss to Ephrata on the 24th, Rychener supplied the Bucks' lone point winning her singles duel 7-5, 6-2.
GIRLS' SOCCER
Last week's schedule was marked by a tough loss to Warwick and another draw, this time against non-league opponent Red Lion.
On the 28th, the squad fell behind the Warriors by a final count of 2-1.
Warwick struck first with a goal after just eight minutes on the field, but CV responded just before halftime with the equalizer from Delainey Varela-Keen, assisted by Leah Buch.
Unfortunately for the Bucks, the Warriors slipped in their second goal just three minutes into the second half and held on for the win.
CV keeper Riley Houck grabbed seven saves in the loss.
On the 25th, CV reached a 2-2 stalemate against Red Lion, the fourth tie of the season and the sixth contest they have been required to head into overtime.
Varela-Keen provided an unassisted goal for the Bucks and Halie Rich netted the other with an assist from Gabriella Neiman.
