Veterans Day ceremony will return to Millersville

Millersville Borough's annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville. The event will feature a guest speaker, and it will be attended by various government officials and veterans' organizations from the local community.

Parking will be available in any of the three lots located near Freedom Memorial Park, and transportation will be offered via golf cart to take guests from the parking areas to the location of the ceremony. Light refreshments will be served at the park after the ceremony.

The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will kick off the memorial service. The group participates in the ceremony every year, and the event organizers typically invite a local veteran to speak. This year's guest speaker, David Owen, is an associate professor of political science at Millersville University and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Previous guest speakers include Millersville University's deputy chief of police, Howard Bauman, a veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.

The ceremony will be attended by a representative from state Sen. Scott Martin's office, County Commissioner Josh Parsons and Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El.

Millersville Borough held its first Veterans Day ceremony in 2013 as part of the dedication of the memorial at Freedom Memorial Park. The memorial includes bricks that have been engraved with the names of veterans from the local community. Local residents may purchase bricks from the borough to honor a friend or a family member who has served in the military; each brick is dedicated at the park during the annual ceremony. The memorial currently includes 844 engraved bricks.

"I think it's a great way for Millersville Borough to honor our veterans here and in the greater community," said borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall. "We have a beautiful memorial at the park, and so many people and organizations show their support every year."

Every year, multiple local businesses and organizations support the event in various ways. A wreath donated by Members 1st Federal Credit Union will be placed on the memorial during the ceremony, and the golf cart used for transportation to the site will be provided by Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory. The refreshments offered after the service have been donated by John Herr's Village Market. Additionally, members of the Conestoga River Girl Scouts make jacket ornaments from poppies to hand out during each ceremony.
