Veteran To Share His Story

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia, at 7 p.m.

The speaker will be Louis Cinfici, a native of Reading. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his brothers who were in the military, at the age of 16, Cinfici forged his parents' signatures so he could enlist in the Merchant Marines. In the Atlantic Theater, his job was to salvage what he could from destroyed ships and save as many lives as possible. He then traveled to the Pacific Theater, where he fought at Midway, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other locations. He and his shipmates shot down several kamikaze planes that nearly hit them. After he was old enough to legally sign up, Cinfici joined the Navy, and he fought in Korea and Vietnam. He was recently awarded the Gold Medal of Honor.

The meeting is open to all World War II veterans and anyone with an interest in World War II history. For more information, call 717-319-3430.
