Track and field seniors and alumni to be honored

Solanco's Track and Field Senior Night and Alumni Hall of Fame Night will be held Monday, May 6, at a home meet against Lampeter-Strasburg. Solanco High School is located at 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville.

Non-stadium events - shot put, discus, and javelin - will start at 4:30 p.m. The Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will be inducted at 5:15 p.m. on the track near the starting line. The inductees will be presented with banners that will be displayed each track season along the track fencing.

Stadium events - track and infield events - will get underway at 5:30 p.m.

Seniors will be recognized after the final event.

The first Track and Field Hall of Fame class consists of 11 former student-athletes who captured state championship first- or second-place finishes.

The inductees include Jeff Derr, who placed second in the 1-mile run at the 1967 PIAA State Championship. He also finished fifth in the same race one year later.

Glenn Wimer was the 1974 PIAA state champion in the 2-mile run and runner-up in the same race in 1973. He still holds the boys' school record for the 3,200-meter run at 9 minutes, 20 seconds.

Cliff Wimer was the 1975 PIAA state champion in the mile and 2-mile runs. He was also third in the 2-mile run in 1974. He has a total of five state championships in cross-country and track and field. Wimer still holds the boys' school record for the 1,600-meter run at 4:19.

Ben Myers was the 1975 PIAA state champion in the discus. He was also sixth in the shot put in the 1974 PIAA State Championship meet and second in the pole vault in the 1979 state meet. Myers still holds the boys' school record for the discus at 160-9.

Doug Bushong was the 1978 PIAA state champion in the pole vault (14-2), 1979 indoor state champion in the pole vault (14-9), and the 1979 silver medal winner in the PIAA State Championship in the same event.

Brian Good took first place in the pole vault in the 1995 indoor state championships and was the second-place finisher in the pole vault in the 1995 Outdoor State Championship. He is the current record holder for the boys' pole vault at 15-0.

The girls' 4x800-meter relay team of Melissa Brazee Sizemore, Brenda Pennell Kiem, Jodie Carter Unger, and Jen Lefever won the 1991 PIAA State Championship and ranked third in the United States that year. The team still holds the girls' school record in the 4x800 at 9:18.

Katie Urbine was the 2023 PIAA state champion in the pole vault and the 2022 runner-up. Urbine is the current PIAA State Championship Meet pole vault record holder at 13-9, the current PIAA District 3 pole vault record holder at 12-6, and the current Solanco girls' record hold at 13-9.

All of these athletes earned multiple PIAA District 3 and Lancaster-Lebanon League championship titles in their tenure at Solanco.
