Lititz Borough Asks For Patience With Snow Removal

The Merchandiser interviewed members of the Lititz Public Works Department concerning snow removal in the borough. Andy Garner, superintendent of public works; assistant superintendent Tyler Toburen; and employee Chad Reed all answered questions about the best ways all community members can work together to keep Lititz streets safe this winter.

Merchandiser: How many plows does the borough utilize?

Garner: We have seven plows and seven crew members. We have two dump truck sized plows.

Merchandiser: Do cars need to be removed from the street before a storm?

Garner: Yes, we ask that residents remove their cars from the street if possible.

Merchandiser: Are borough residents required to clean the sidewalks in front of their homes?

Reed: Yes, but turn snowblower shoots toward the grass. Do not blow the snow into the street.

Merchandiser: How should residents handle shoveling the ends of their driveways?

Toburen: Leave the last three feet at the road until after we go by with the plow. If you leave that last three feet, when we're through, you will only have to shovel it once.

Merchandiser: Should residents clear the snow around a car parked on the street?

Toburen: When a snowstorm hits, we start plowing. Before we get to a certain street, people take their snowblowers and start snowblowing around a car parked on the street. They will have the snow all cleared, then when we come along, we push it back over. If they throw it back on the street, we have to plow it again.

Reed: Please be patient (and wait for us to plow first).

Merchandiser: Any areas that are special problems?

Garner: Cul de sac parking - if you can't get off the road on to a driveway, please park along the curb rather than parking head in.

Merchandiser: How are decisions made about when to start plowing?

Garner: The Lititz Borough police are out on the roads, and they will contact public works (about) road conditions. Police call us to let us know about putting down salt when it's slippery. We don't plow until there's three inches of snow.

Merchandiser: Do you have a mailbox policy?

Garner: If we damage something, we will make good on it.

Merchandiser: Anything you would like to add?

Garner: Remove cars from the street and then be patient. That will be greatly appreciated.
