Tel Hai resident celebrates 104th birthday

"I feel like queen for the day," said Theresa Yunger, who turned 104 on March 4. She celebrated her birthday during a party on March 3 at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, where she resides.

Yunger, who was given a tiara to wear, enjoyed cake, a rendition of "Happy Birthday" by Tel Hai residents and staff members and a visit by state Rep. Dan Williams, who presented her with an honorary citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Yunger, who was born on March 4, 1919, has been a resident of Tel Hai since 1996. An additional party was held on her actual birthday with residents of Hillcrest Apartments, where she lived until recently before moving to the Meadows Health Care Center.

Yunger grew up and resided in New Jersey, where she was a housewife. She and her late husband, Alex, had two children. Yunger currently has two grandchildren. "I had a good husband and a good life," Yunger said.

When asked her secret to a long life, she replied, "I take it easy whenever I can. Don't get too excited about things."

Williams said that he enjoyed celebrating Yunger's birthday with her. "It is my honor to be here today ... to show appreciation for your investment in our community and the life you lived," he stated.

Williams then presented Yunger with the citation, which read in part, "The House of Representatives is always pleased to recognize those individuals who through their wisdom and experience have contributed to the enrichment and betterment of succeeding generations. (Yunger) has demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship through the years and truly deserves special recognition ... (and) has generously contributed to the wellbeing of others. We offer her best wishes and every future happiness."

Tel Hai staff members on hand for the celebration included Tel Hai president Dave Shenk; Diane Kabbeko, activities manager; and Jolene Weaver, director of communications. "(Yunger) is awesome, spry and quite an inspiration to all who know her," Weaver said.

A poster at the celebration noted that at the age of 104, Yunger has lived for 5,408 weeks; 37,960 days; 911,040 hours; and more than 54 million minutes.
