Take A Drive To Bethlehem

The members of Ruhl's Church invite you to journey back in time more than 2,000 years to a quiet little town called Bethlehem, where a baby who will change the world has just been born.

The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host a Drive to Bethlehem and free ham dinner on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

When people arrive at the church, they will be greeted by a Roman centurion, who will inquire if visitors are coming to Bethlehem for the census that was decreed by Caesar Augustus. The soldier will give visitors a booklet with the Christmas story, so people can follow along through the drive. Stations will include shepherds in the field watching their flocks and angels giving glory to God. Before guests arrive at the Nativity scene, the church will offer a complete takeout dinner featuring ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. The final scene will depict the three wise men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.

"This event has been wonderfully received in the past," said Steph Heisey, one of the organizers. "We've served up to 300 or 400 people."

Beverly Snavely, who is also helping to organize the event, noted that church members portray the characters in the various scenes, complete with costumes, and that live animals are featured as well. "It's really something to see," she said.

Heisey stated that not only does the Drive to Bethlehem offer a free meal, but it also provides sustenance for the soul. "It's about getting to see the Christmas story come to life and understand the true meaning of Christmas," she said. "It's just a neat time for families to be together."

Reservations are required for the ham dinner and may be made by calling 717-665-4499. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 14. Anyone who wants to experience the Drive to Bethlehem without the meal may just show up on Dec. 17.
