Summer Reading Program To Begin

"We want to encourage kids to read for fun," said Jan Betty, director of children and youth of the Milanof-Schock Library. With that in mind, she invites kids of all ages to participate in the library's Summer Reading Program. This year's theme will be "Oceans of Possibilities," and the program will kick off on Saturday, June 4, with crafts and activities from 9 a.m. to noon at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. The library has also created a new fairy garden, and visitors are encouraged to submit names for the garden. The chosen name will be revealed on June 4. The Summer Reading Program will run through Saturday, Aug. 13.

New this year, Summer Reading will feature a series called "So You Want To Be A ..." "Each week, I'll bring in a special guest to talk about what they do," Betty explained. The series will be held on Thursdays at 10 a.m., beginning June 9 and running through Aug. 11. "I'll do the first week, 'So You Want To Be a ... Storyteller,' and then we'll have a firefighter, a pollinator, an animal rescuer and more," she stated.

Other highlights of the Summer Reading Program will include what Betty is calling "Super Saturdays," featuring a variety of activities. "We'll kick that off on June 18 with a demonstration of radio-controlled planes," she said. Other Saturday programs will include a Makerfest on June 25, a patriotic celebration on July 2 and Bubble Fun on July 16.

The library's adult Summer Reading Program has a theme of "Every Day's a Holiday" and will feature weekly challenges related to holidays.

In addition to the Summer Reading Program, the library will offer its regular programming. The Classical Guitar Society of Lancaster will present its Summer Warm-up Concert on Friday, June 3, at 7 p.m.; the event is free. The Northwest Book Club will meet on Wednesday, June 8, at 6 p.m. to discuss "The Great Alone" by Kristin Hannah.

People of all ages may discover the world of oceans during a program presented by the Center for Aquatic Sciences on Thursday, June 9, at 3 p.m. Preregistration is required.
