Student wins statewide scholarship

East Hempfield resident Thomas Russell received a $1,500 scholarship from the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) during the East Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors' meeting on April 2. Russell, a Hempfield High School junior with a 4.0 GPA, was recognized for his involvement within his township, as well as his personal and academic achievements and his leadership.

As a member of Boy Scout Troop 349, Russell completed an Eagle Scout project that involved building a new pedestrian bridge at Fairview Park to replace a dilapidated one. Russell and his fellow Scouts completed the community project, which included clearing downed trees and brush. The project also qualified Russell for the PSATS scholarship.

PSATS scholarships, funded in partnership with the Pennsylvania Leadership Institute, recognize high school juniors and seniors living in townships of the second class who plan to further their education through college, trade or technical school, or a career certificate program.

Four $1,500 scholarships are available in the categories of Local Government Achievement and Academic Achievement. The Local Government Achievement Scholarship highlights outstanding citizenship through public service and community involvement. The Local Government Academic Achievement Scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit enthusiasm toward education by maintaining high academic standards.
