LAMS Archer Excels In Competition

Asked what she liked best about taking part in the U.S. Eastern Regional Archery Competition in Louisville, Ky., in mid-May, Kaylee Zimmerman, a fifth-grade student at Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS), did not hesitate to consider her answer. "Shooting," she stated.

To reach the Louisville tournament, Zimmerman shot a 249 at a National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Pennsylvania competition, which was held at Penn State University in March. At the state competition, Zimmerman placed fourth of 64 elementary girls, second of 25 fifth-grade girls, and 170th of 393 overall in her division.

In Louisville, Zimmerman shot a 255 to earn an elementary girls' placement of 193 of 1,243 young women. She placed 147th of 735 fifth-grade girls competing and 2,509th of 5,352 girls overall.

Zimmerman began competing with a bow and arrow two years ago when she joined the LAMS archery team. She is looking forward to competing at the middle school level as a sixth-grader next year. Noting that she plans to practice between vacation trips this summer, Zimmerman said she is focused on growing in the sport. She especially noted that she has fun as she makes progress. "I get to shoot and learn from my mistakes, so I know what to do next," she said.

LAMS sixth-grade student Andre Zook and fifth-grader Kaleb Zimmerman also qualified for the regional competition in Kentucky, but neither was able to attend.

LAMS is a fully accredited Christian school for children from kindergarten through high school. For more than 40 years, the school has worked to provide a Christ-centered education to area families. Currently, the school serves nearly 300 area students. For more information, readers may visit http://www.lams.info.
