Sportsman Event to feature speaker, wild game dinner

Steve Shuster, who helps organize the annual Sportsman Event presented annually by the Outdoorsman Ministry Group at the Christian Life Center (CLC), will also be the featured speaker during this year's program on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 4 p.m.

In addition to the speaker, the evening will include a traditional wild game covered dish dinner, a silent auction and a display of outdoor products. All attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win door prizes, which will include artwork and hunting packages.

Shuster has been in the hunting and fishing business for more than 30 years with W.L. Gore & Associates, a company that manufactures waterproof outdoor apparel like jackets, gloves and hiking boots. "I have been speaking at churches for four to five years, and the organizing committee asked me to share my story this year," said Shuster, noting that the first part of his talk will focus on the theme "From Success to Significance."

"Unfortunately, I was focused on success, which was all about me and individual accompaniments," said Shuster. "Not until I realized what I was missing and how selfish I was did I (come to learn) the importance and significance in making an impact in others' lives and in changing the world. I will challenge the audience with pointed questions like 'What is your purpose?' and 'Why are you here?'"

Shuster's program will also feature a segment on hunting and fishing. "I will share some useful, practical tips that I learned from the hunting and fishing business and producing a major hunting TV show on ESPN"s Outdoor Channel," he noted. "I will have clips from my (hunting) experience through the U.S. and New Zealand."

On March 11, doors will open at 4 p.m., during which time attendees can view silent auction items and displays by vendors, as well as sports memorabilia and taxidermy displays. at 5:45 p.m., dinner and the opening of the silent auction will open. Shuster's presentation will follow at 6:45 p.m. The program will end with the prize drawings and the announcement of silent auction winners.

Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, dessert or side dish in a quantity to feed at least eight people. For food safety, hot covered dishes must be prepared on the day of the event and be at a safe internal temperature. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers.

CLC is located at 125 Saginaw Road, New London. Tickets must be purchased in advance for people over age 12; seating is limited.
