Soiree On The Susquehanna

"A lot of people think the Susquehanna River divides Lancaster and York counties, but I like to think of it as a zipper," said Bill Wright, director of community giving for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA). "It's a connector. It brings us together."

The river will take center stage when Susquehanna NHA holds its Summer Soiree Redux beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. The event will take place at River's Edge at Long Level, 1829 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

Organizers are calling it a "Redux" because last year's event had to be canceled, Wright explained, noting the Summer Soiree is an opportunity to raise funds for the organization while also highlighting the history and culture of the region.

The event will feature pontoon boat rides on the Susquehanna, live jazz from the Tom Pontz Trio, food and beverages and a silent auction. "We'll have more than 40 items," Wright noted. "We'll have things like river experiences, boat rentals, paddleboard lessons, artwork and more."

The soiree will kick off the 20th anniversary celebration of the organization being recognized as a state heritage area, Wright said, adding that a variety of activities are planned all weekend for the anniversary. In 2019, Susquehanna Heritage was designated as a national heritage area and has made the Susquehanna River the centerpiece of its programming. The organization operates the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville and manages the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia.

Offering programming on both sides of the river works well with Susquehanna NHA's mission of promoting outdoor fun and cultural discovery. "Lancaster and York counties share a lot of things in terms of culture, heritage, geology and history," Wright said. "We're working on developing partnerships with other groups in the area that align with our mission." Along with providing field trip opportunities, lecture series, outdoor programming and more, Susquehanna NHA is an economic driver for the region, he stated, as it brings in tourists for events and activities.

The Summer Soiree will help Susquehanna NHA continue its educational programming and fund upcoming events and major projects. "Coming to the soiree is a way to support an organization that is working to preserve and conserve our heritage as well as promote the region as an economic engine," Wright remarked. "It will be a fun evening to come out, enjoy some food and live music and take a boat ride at a gorgeous place. And you'll be helping us continue to support and promote the culture and heritage of this area."
