More than 50 exhibitors will be available to offer information on programs and services for older community residents at Sen. Scott Martin's Senior Expo on Thursday, Aug. 27. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. It is free of charge.

Representatives of state, county, and local agencies will be on hand to provide information on benefits for older Pennsylvanians, including health and wellness, assistive technologies, consumer protection, income tax assistance, veterans' benefits, traffic safety, and utility assistance. Free health screenings, door prizes, and light refreshments will also be available.

The theme of this year's Senior Expo is "America the Beautiful" in recognition of the nation's 250th anniversary. Weather permitting, a flag-raising ceremony will kick off the expo, and America250PA will be available to hand out free merchandise at the event.

The Lancaster District Attorney's Office will be on-site to help citizens properly dispose of unused prescription medications. People may bring old, unused, or unneeded medications to the event and place them in the secure box at the Lancaster County Drug Task Force table staffed by a Lancaster County detective. The initiative is being offered to slow the abuse of prescription medications.

As a new feature at this year's expo, Tech Buddies - a nonprofit organization that encourages teenage volunteers to help older Pennsylvanians with cellphones and other devices - will be available to provide technology tutoring to seniors.
