Scouts achieve Eagle rank

During a Court of Honor in June, Boy Scout Troop 349 recognized three Scouts who had earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in Scouts BSA. The honorees were Avery Like, Donald Macaulay, and Nancy Winand. In addition to earning the Eagle Scout Award, they received citations from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives recognizing their achievement. State Rep. Brett Miller presented the citations.

Eagle Scouts must serve their community, families, and troop; lead other Scouts; demonstrate and teach outdoor skills; and complete 21 merit badges.

Avery is the son of Tara Albin and Matthew Like. He is a 2023 graduate of Hempfield High School. Avery was a member of Cub Scout Pack 125, and he joined Boy Scout Troop 349 in fifth grade. He has served the troop as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, and patrol leader, and he was elected to the Order of the Arrow. Avery attended Jamborees at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, Sea Base, and Philmont Scout Ranch. For his Eagle project, he built a gaga pit at the Lancaster Community Park on Millersville Pike. This past year, Avery studied at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, and he will attend Mississippi State University to study history.

Donald is the son of Linda Macaulay and graduated from Hempfield High School this year. While Donald was a Cub Scout, he and his den received the American Red Cross Philanthropist of the Year Award for collecting more than $1,000 for relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy. In Troop 349, Donald has served as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, troop quartermaster, and assistant senior patrol leader. He was elected to the Order of the Arrow, and he attended the Sea Base program in 2020. For his Eagle project, Donald donated 50 backpacks filled with items to Bethany Christian Services for distribution to foster children; in each backpack, he placed a fleece blanket, a nightlight, dental care items, school supplies, and the book "The Invisible String." Donald plans to study computer science at Penn State Behrend.

Nancy is the daughter of Nancy Cooney and David Winand, and she is a 2024 graduate of Hempfield High School. Nancy's experiences with Scouting began when she joined Troop 349 during high school. She has served as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, and patrol leader. She was also elected to the Order of the Arrow. For her Eagle project, Nancy built a jumbo Lite Brite for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Nancy plans to study biochemistry at Penn State.

Troop 349 assists boys and girls with character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Scouts can also volunteer in the community and meet peers. During the school year, regular monthly activities include meetings, which include learning outdoor skills, as well as camping trips. Summer activities this year include attending camp at Bashore Scout Reservation. The troop meets from August through June on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville.
