Scout Troop 1 will mark 110 years
More than a century ago, a Boy Scout troop formed in Elizabethtown. Today, the troop is still going strong, and the community is invited to a celebration of Scout Troop 1's 110th anniversary. The party will be held at Cassell Farms, 522 Cassell Road, Elizabethtown, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.
"We will have Scout activities, memorabilia and a campfire that will surely bring back fond memories for past Scouts and provide a sense of nostalgia," said Caitlin Fickes, a parent of a Scout in the troop. "The display of memorabilia from the last 110 years will showcase the rich history of the troop and its evolution over the years."
At 6 p.m., a troop photo will be taken, and all past and present members of Troop 1 are welcome to participate. "It will be a wonderful way to capture the moment and create a lasting memory for everyone involved," Caitlin said. "It's always special to see past and present members come together, and this photo will be a great way to commemorate the occasion." The party will also feature hot dogs and snacks and an opportunity learn about Scouts and the troop's history.
Scout Troop 1 is the oldest troop in Elizabethtown. "The mission of the Boy Scouts Troop 1 is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law," explained leader Leo Gomez. "The purpose of the Boy Scouts, incorporated on Feb. 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for youth to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop personal fitness."
Although Boy Scouts underwent a name change in recent years, becoming Scouting America and inviting girls to join troops, the underlying purpose of the organization has not changed, Gomez said.
"Through its 110 years, Troop 1 has supported families in our community to equip and develop our Scouts to be active and responsible citizens," he stated. "Service to the community and others is something we strongly believe in."
Troop 1 participates in the annual Scouting for Food drive in Elizabethtown, and members help with yardwork and community cleanups. "The Wreaths Across America ceremony at Fort Indiantown Gap is a way to honor our nation's veterans and it's a meaningful experience for the Scouts who participate," said Jamie Fickes, Troop 1 committee chair, who noted that the troop also assists the Winters Heritage House Museum with various projects.
Currently, Troop 1 has 13 members. The troop is open to boys and girls ages 11 to 17, and new members are invited to make lasting friendships, learn life skills, have fun and develop leadership abilities. "A great reason to join Scouting is that Scouting offers a unique combination of community service, outdoor adventure and personal development that can have a lasting impact on a young person's life," Jamie said.
