Ryerss Farm sets Run for the Horses, Easter egg hunt

Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines, 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown, will hold two special events in April, including the 13th annual Ryerss Run for the Horses on Saturday, April 12, followed by an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 26. Proceeds from both events will benefit the rescued and retired horses that reside at the farm. To register or for more information, visit http://www.ryerssfarm.org and select "Events."

The Run for the Horses will feature 10K and 5K runs and a 1-mile walk. Race-day registration will begin at noon, and the races and walk will start at 1 p.m. sharp, rain or shine.

The runs and the walk will take participants along a cross-country course. The walkers will take a 1-mile route that is closer to the farm.

Runners in the 5K and 10K will be electronically timed. Winners in various age divisions in the 5K and 10K will receive medals. The 10K course will be new this year; runners will not have to complete the 5K course twice as in years past. A post-race celebration with music and refreshments will follow the walk and run.

The site's gift shop will be open during the day, offering equine-related items; gift items; stuffed animals; and Ryerss apparel such as hats, T-shirts and hoodies.

On the day of the event, people will be able to visit the horses that reside at the farm, many of which get together along the fence to watch people run by. Those not planning to run or walk are also welcome to attend.

Attendees will also be able to visit with the horses and stop by the gift shop during the site's Easter egg hunt. The hunt for children ages 2 and 3 will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the hunt for children ages 4 to 6 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Some eggs in each age group will contain coupons for special prizes.

"We hide the eggs in the barn, so it's rain or shine," said Lynn Seeburger, a member of the Ryerss board of managers, adding that the Easter Bunny will also be on hand and available for photos. "The kids get so excited when they see the Easter Bunny."

Attendees will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets.

Preregistration is required for the egg hunt, and there will be a fee charged per child. Attendance is limited to 35 children per age group, and there will be no registration on the day of the event.

Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines, founded in 1888, is a nonprofit organization located on 383 acres in Warwick and South Coventry townships. It is celebrating its 137th anniversary this year. Ryerss Farm provides a place where animals can retire and spend their golden years out to pasture. The horses at Ryerss are never worked or ridden again. Ryerss is also home to several retired donkeys.

Community members are welcome to visit the horses daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Those who want to feed snacks to the horses are asked to purchase treats from the gift shop rather than bringing items from home.
