Rock Star to Host Veterans' Benefit

Michael Kelly Smith, the co-founder and lead guitarist of glam metal band Britny Fox, could not bear to hear of financial difficulties at Parkesburg VFW Post 4480.

Having family members in Post 4480, Kelly Smith (Schermick) learned that the post is struggling to make ends meet. So, he came up with a solution.

On Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Kelly Smith will host a "Veterans Rock" record show and meet and greet at Post 4480, 406 W. 4th Ave., Parkesburg.

An admission price will be charged; all veterans get in for free. All proceeds will go toward the post, benefiting veterans and their families.

"Record shows do really well as far as drawing people, so I thought if I do a meet and greet and combine it with a record show, we could easily get (300) to 400 people there," said Kelly Smith, who also performed with Cinderella in the mid '80s. "With the admission price, along with the profits from food and drinks all day, and the record vendors renting tables, that's the whole thing."

Based out of the Philadelphia area, Britny Fox was originally active from 1985 to 1992, releasing three albums in that span. They are best known for the songs "Girlschool" and "Long Way to Love," the latter of which charted stateside. The band has since reformed three times, most recently from 2015 to 2016.

The band's self-titled 1988 record, released by Columbia records, reached gold certification.

Kelly Smith did a meet and greet in Red Lion last year, which is what gave him the idea for the upcoming benefit.

"I thought, if I could draw that many people in Red Lion, I could draw more people here," said Kelly Smith, who has lived in Parkesburg for a decade. "It's a more centralized location. You can get people from York and Lancaster, from Delaware and Maryland and Philly."

The show will feature a "live jam session" from Kelly Smith, as well as vinyl and CD vendors from the area. Vintage Britny Fox merchandise and memorabilia will also be available for purchase.

There will also be drawings to raise money. Along with memorabilia, two guitars and amps will be available. There will also be a 50/50 drawing.

"The feedback has been really outstanding," he said. "We're just trying to raise every dollar that we can."
