Righteous Clothing Thrift Store to host auction

The Righteous Clothing Thrift Store will hold a year-end auction on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Parkesburg United Methodist Church (UMC), 411 Main St., Parkesburg. A large variety of goods will be up for bid, including high-end items that have been available for sale in the store as well as holiday decor. Bidder registration will open at 9 a.m., followed by the auction at 10 a.m.

The first-time event is being held to make room for additional merchandise to be displayed in the store, which is located at 317 Main St., Parkesburg. Because of the auction, the store will be closed on Dec. 16.

"We have a very large quantity of donations that we get from the community, and we have a lot of higher-dollar items, so we thought this would be a great way to have some fun, make some money and get some of these items sold," said Nicole Starner, who is the store's lead volunteer along with Mae Taylor. "We (also) want everybody to hear about the store. A lot of people don't know about us."

Several hundred items, varying in price, will be sold at the event. "It's not just going to be expensive stuff," noted Starner. Items on the auction block will include vintage glassware and toys, antiques, jewelry and sports memorabilia. The church's United Methodists in Action (UMIA) group will auction off homemade baked goods.

The auctioneer will be Ken Griest, who is volunteering his time for the event. Cash and credit card will be accepted for payment, and food will be available for purchase.

Righteous Clothing Thrift Store, which opened in 2009, offers pet supplies; sporting goods; accessories, including belts, wallets and purses; baby supplies; puzzles; antiques and collectibles; toys; books; seasonal decor; and clothing for men, women and children.

Proceeds from the store are donated directly to local nonprofit organizations. Recipients of funds last year included the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, Keystone Valley Fire Department, Parkesburg Free Library, the Parkesburg Borough Police Department, the Atglen Public Library, the Parkesburg POINT youth center, Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO), David's Drive 831 and Everybody Plays!

Starner hopes that people will consider attending the upcoming auction to support the thrift store and the community. "We have so much stuff, and our store can only (hold) so much," she said. "We want to be able to put out new (items), and this will make more room."
