Read Moore Book Store to celebrate 10th anniversary

The Friends of Moores Memorial Library will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Read Moore Book Store with special promotions planned for Thursday, Nov. 2, through Saturday, Nov. 4. In addition, an open house will be held on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. featuring a talk by guest author Bruce Mowday.

Activities will begin on Nov. 2 when shoppers will receive a coupon for 10% off a future purchase. On Friday, Nov. 3, all regular-priced fiction books will be listed at 2013 prices. On Nov. 4, there will be a book sale; attendees will be able to fill a bag of fiction books at regular price for a suggested donation.

During the open house on Nov. 2, Mowday will discuss his most recent book, "Small-Town Cops in the Crosshairs: The 1972 Sniper Slayings of Policemen William Davis and Richard Posey," which details the ambush of two law enforcement officers by a member of the Johnston gang in Kennett Square.

Mowday resides in Chester County and is the author of more than 20 books, specializing in local history, business, sports and true crime. Copies of Mowday's books may be purchased at the event for signing.

Doors for Mowday's presentation will open at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required. The donation fee includes general admission entry, light refreshments and a special preview sale of fiction books. Seating is limited.

The Read Moore Book Store is located in the lower level of the library, which also houses a community room. The featured books on sale come from community donations and the library's collection. Volunteers with the Friends group maintain and run the store, which raises funds for library programming.

The library and bookstore opened in 2013 in the former Wachovia bank building after moving from a location on Bridge Street, across from the Christiana Lions Club building.

Books in the store are displayed on unique shelving - inside a canoe and the frame of a baby grand piano. There is also a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters, which were repurposed by Friends member Janice Crills. Since the library's building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the "vault."

"When it opened, we only were allowed to use one room and the back was the community room," explained Friends vice president Jeannette Kolb. "As time went on, we started making profit for the library and adding more books."

To accommodate the growing collection, the Friends members recently installed shelving along the perimeter of the community room. "All of the hardback nonfiction will be back in the community room," said Kolb. "People will notice the difference when they come in for the open house."

Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. For more information about the open house and activities, visit http://www.facebook.com/ReadMooreBookStore.
