Railroad Museum slates Mason-Dixon Ramble

The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania have opened registration for the Mason-Dixon Ramble train ride, which will take place on Sunday, May 19, at 7 a.m. Registration will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 16, and members of the organization will be offered a discounted ticket price.

The Mason-Dixon Ramble will include a scenic, daylong train ride along the North Central Railway. During the first leg of the trip, passengers will have an opportunity to see multiple historic towns located above the Maryland border as the train follows the tracks of the old rail line. Once the train crosses the border into Maryland, travelers will ride on the Walkersville Southern Railroad as it passes through farmlands and active locomotive yards. The train conductor will provide insight on the history of the areas along the route by offering historical details as the trip progresses.

The ticket for the Mason-Dixon Ramble will include round-trip transportation via chartered motorcoach from Lancaster or Harrisburg. Each ticket will also entitle a traveler to lunch and dinner during the train's scheduled stops in New Freedom and Glen Rock, respectively.

This is the third Mason-Dixon Ramble that the Railroad Museum has offered over the last 25 years, although the event and its itinerary vary slightly each time. Unlike many of the museum's other programs and offerings, the Ramble is a long-distance traveling experience that takes passengers out of the county. The stops along the train's route are always selected to highlight destinations that are of historical, cultural or scenic interest to the railroading community.

"Ramblers will enjoy train rides on the two participating tourist railroads as well as dinner at the Glen Rock Mill Inn and the companionship of fellow Ramblers," said Deborah Reddig, the Railroad Museum's advancement director. "The Friends strives to highlight railroading in all of its forms, historic and contemporary, for the benefit and enjoyment of the Ramblers."
