Public invited to Camp Security dig site

The public can visit the Camp Security dig site on Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Camp Security is located off Locust Grove Road in East York. Visitors are asked to park at Good News Free Will Baptist Church, 530 Locust Grove Road, York. Shuttles will be provided from that location.

Camp Security, which operated from 1781 to 1783, was a Revolutionary War prisoner of war camp that has not been lost to development. This year's dig is uncovering more of the stockade site.

On June 6, lead archaeologist John Crawmer will discuss the work presently being done, and historians Jonathan Stayer and June Lloyd will share the history of Camp Security.

Friends of Camp Security board members will be available to answer questions about the work completed so far, the need for funding for ongoing archaeology, and future plans for interpretation and public access.

Volunteers will be excavating and demonstrating the investigation process. Reproductions of documents concerning the operation of the prisoner of war camp and other graphics will be on display.

Those who have questions may call Friends of Camp Security president Carol Tanzola at 717-578-2485.
