Program to focus on Shenks Ferry

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a slideshow presentation titled "Tales of History and Adventure in Shenks Ferry" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 12. Meetings are held in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Educator and amateur historian Adam Zurn will share stories of history-rich Shenks Ferry. Topics will include a settler cemetery hidden in the woods, the explosion of a dynamite factory that claimed 11 lives, and the Safe Harbor petroglyphs, created by Native Americans who once lived in the area of Shenks Ferry. A question-and-answer period will end the discussion.

Zurn has been an educator at Lampeter-Strasburg High School for 23 years, serving as chair of the Practical Arts Department and teaching technology education and computer science. He is a member of the board of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, advocating for the preservation of buildings with historical or architectural significance, and the founder of Uncharted Lancaster, a website that explores the county's hidden history through articles, treasure hunts, and guided tours. Each summer, Zurn leads excursions to the 1,000-year-old petroglyphs at Safe Harbor; to learn more, visit http://www.kayaklanco.com/petroglyphs-guided-tour.
