Program To Focus on History of Photography

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation titled "Photography of the Civil War" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Steven M. Whitcomb, a retired CPA who has more than 40 years experience in photography, including work with the University of Pennsylvania.

Whitcomb will explore the history of photography from 1825 up to the Civil War, with a focus on its evolving processes and key individuals who spearheaded them, as well as its impact on national events such as the Cooper Union portrait of Abraham Lincoln and Matthew Brady at the Battle of Antietam. He will also discuss the ways that people viewed photos, including stereographs, and display his collection of cameras and equipment from the 1920s to the 1940s. A question-and-answer period will close the meeting.

Whitcomb, a Mount Joy resident and Mechanicsburg native, served as a CFO, controller, and vice president of finance with specializations in mergers and acquisitions, international business, business systems implementation, turnarounds, and restructuring. He graduated from East Pennsboro High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts at Cornell University and Master of Business Administration at the University of Pennsylvania.
