Program to focus on historic Mount Gretna postcards

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host its own Sue Hostetter as guest speaker at its meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Her program is titled "Mount Gretna: A History in Postcards."

Through postcards, attendees will take a trip back in time to visit Mount Gretna as it was in its early years. Based on the postcard collections of Morris Griner, Karl Gettle and Gerald Hostetter, attendees will learn about Robert Coleman and his railroad, which led to the creation of Mount Gretna. The National Guard soldiers who conducted maneuvers on Soldiers Field, amusement parks and hotels, Lake Conewago, the Farmers Exposition, the Campmeeting, the Chautauqua Movement and more will be covered.

Sue Hostetter is chair of the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society and chair of the Chautauqua Summer Programs series. She is a retired teacher and librarian who has taught in the Baltimore City, Carroll County and Penn Manor school districts. She became interested in postcards because her father-in-law was a postcard collector. Some of the postcards featured at the meeting will be from his collection.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the program.

The historical society building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Community members may conduct research and view the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information about the historical society, visit http://www.mountjoyhistory.com.
