Presentation to focus on religious movement

The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation titled "A Spiritual Conflagration: How the Second Great Awakening Sundered Pennsylvania" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Lee C. Barrett, the Stager Professor of Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary, will explore the Second Great Awakening that lasted from 1800 to approximately 1840. Barrett noted that the effects of this widespread revival are still apparent in American culture. Handouts will be provided, and a question-and-answer session will end the meeting.

Barrett, who has taught at Lancaster Theological Seminary since 1984, lectures and writes about the history of theology in America and the thoughts of Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. His books include "Kierkegaard's Religious Thought in Relation to Current Religious Discourse," "Kierkegaard on God's Will and Human Freedom," and "Kierkegaard in Context." A Lancaster city resident, Barrett has earned several academic degrees, including a Doctor of Philosophy in religious studies, a Master of Philosophy in religious studies, and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, along with a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.
