Presentation to focus on Henry Stiegel

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a slideshow presentation titled "From Iron to Glass: The Vision of Henry Stiegel" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Daniel Snyder, who is a local historian, an antiques collector, and a novice in archaeology. Snyder, who has lived on the square in Manheim since 1990, retired in 2021 after serving for 44 years in upper-level management at senior living communities.

His presentation will examine the life and vision of Manheim founder Henry Stiegel and his ventures into iron production, real estate development, and eventually glass manufacturing. Snyder also will touch on Stiegel's community and church involvement prior to a question-and-answer period that will bring the meeting to a close.

Several factors contributed to Snyder's interest in history, antiques, and archaeology. His seventh-great-grandfather immigrated to Pennsylvania from Lembach, Germany, in 1732 and established a mill along Codorus Creek in southern York County. Snyder, as a youth, was fond of collecting bottles and gained an appreciation of antiques because they had great meaning to his parents. After Snyder moved to Manheim in 1987, his love of history further developed as he attended local antiques auctions and volunteered in various capacities with the Historic Manheim Preservation Foundation, the Manheim Historical Society, and Historic Schaefferstown, participating in its archaeological digs.
