Pioneers Lead Section Two Baseball Standings

The Pioneers rounded out crossover action with mixed results, posting a convincing 10-1 win over McCaskey April 23 and then dropping a 2-1 final to Hempfield, their third one-run loss of the season and second in three games. They returned to Section Two play last Wednesday with an 8-2 win over CV and lead the Section Two standings at 5-1.

The Pioneers scored early and often against McCaskey, grabbing a 6-0 lead after three innings and responding to the Red Tornado's lone run in the sixth with four in the top of the seventh.

Jack Swarr pitched to all but one batter, tossing a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Jason Long struck out the final batter of the game.

"Jack did a great job," lauded head coach Jeff Swarr. "Jason came in because Jack exhausted his pitch count. They combined for a no-hitter."

Alex Knapp was 3-5 with two RBI's and Braedon Karpathios was 1-5 with three RBI's. Jake Long, Gio Malatesta, Xander Getchis and Joey Doolittle added two hits each.

L-S took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Hempfield but gave up two in the sixth and suffered a 2-1 loss at home. Knapp was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a Jake Long grounder and scored on a Karpathios base hit.

"We struggled to get runners on base after that," noted Swarr. "Peyton Harsh and Jason Long competed like crazy on the mound and gave us a chance to win. Coming into the season we had zero pitchers with varsity experience. Peyton has had two solid outings, Jason has done his job out of the bullpen, Gehrig Harsh gave us the opportunity to win at Township and Caleb Guyer continues to develop and grow on the mound," he added.

With a 12-hit attack, L-S scored in five of seven innings to hand CV an 8-2 defeat. Knapp was the hitting star with a 3-3 effort. Long and Karpathios added two hits each.

BOYS' LACROSSE

In a section with three teams battling for the top spot, L-S moved to 6-1 with wins over Cocalico (12-2) on April 22 and LCD/LCHS (10-6) last Tuesday. Their six-game win streak ended when they dropped a 15-4 non-league outing against Hershey.

"During that streak we were healthy and played strong, fundamentally sound lacrosse," said head coach Mike McConomy. "Now we are decimated by injuries. We went into the Hershey game with only 14 healthy players."

L-S led from start to finish against the Eagles, scoring four goals in each of the first two quarters and firing 32 shots on goal, while holding the visitors to 14.

Stewart McClain racked up six goals and two assists to lead the way. Collin Sullivan (2a) and Chase Barber (1a) each scored twice with Zach Labreque (2a) and Owen Krause adding one apiece.

After a 3-3 first quarter tie against Hershey, L-S failed to score in the second and third quarters while the hosts poured in ten goals to take control.

A 5-1 first quarter jump started Lampeter's 10-6 win over LCD/LC. They also scored four times in the fourth quarter to extend a 6-5 lead.

McClain was tops with six goals and Sullivan added four.

TRACK

In a very tight meet last Monday in New Holland, the Pioneers needed a win in the 4x400 relay at the end of the meet to pull out win over Garden Spot. Jessie Slagado, Maddie Malcolm, Tori Heiserman and Tonna Harnish did just that and L-S escaped with a 78-72 thriller, improving to 3-2 on the year.

"It was tight right down to the end," said head coach Cal Esh. "We won all three relays, which was huge, but we needed that last one to win the meet. The girls ran well."

Heiserman and Harnish along with Molly Wissler and Jaclyn Martin opened the day with a 4x800 win while Madison Weichler, Katelyn Finn, Elly Bruner and Lyndi Wall claimed the 4x100.

Wall also earned firsts in the 100 and 100 while Martin was tops in the 800 and mile.

"That was Jaclyn's first time to run the mile so that was big," noted Esh.

In the field, Maggie Swarr led a sweep in the shot with Kelsey McTaggart (2nd) and Jada Willard (3rd) and also won the discus.

Other Pioneer winners included Bruner in the long jump and Cam Coleman in the pole vault.

The boys' team remained undefeated with a 110-40 victory over winless Garden Spot.

Colin Whitaker, Nathan Eberly, and Ben Devine swept the mile, Luke Wiley, Aiden Wiley, and Mitchell Livengood did the same in the pole vault while Zac Shelley's PR in the javelin led a sweep there with Aiden Jones and Elijah Carr contributing. Shelly also won the shot put.

"That was Zac's first win ever in the javelin," said Esh.

Teagan Weaver won four individual events (100, 200, long and triple jumps) and Christian Otto controlled both hurdle events to further extend Lampeter's advantage.

TENNIS

The tennis team wrapped up their season on a positive note, claiming their second shutout of the year with a dominating effort over Lebanon on April 22. They finish the season at 3-3 in Section Two and were 5-9 overall.

Weston Weaver and Jack Harnish won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Reidenbaugh and Kyle Pawson partnered for an 8-1 win at No. 2. Lebanon forfeited the No. 3 doubles match.

Weaver went on to post a come-from-behind thriller over Cody Zheng, winning 5-7, 7-6, 13-11. Reidenbaugh, Alex Vaziri and Cole Teaman all won in straight sets with Vaziri posting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

The girls' lacrosse team extended its winning streak to five straight with recent wins over Central York (19-5 on April 23), Eastern York (20-6 on April 24) and Cedar Crest 28-5 last Tuesday, moving their overall record to 8-4.

Rowen Kimmel spear-headed the victories with a combined 17 goals and six assists. Riley Dawson added 14 goals, Jeslyn Krebs netted seven goals with five assists, Hannah Gawne (7g, 7a), Kellian Drummond (6g, 5a), Kelly Hostetter (4g, 2a) rounded out the top point-getters.

Zoe Dilling anchored the defense with a combined 13 saves.

SOFTBALL

The softball team wrapped up crossover action with a 24-0, three inning win over McCaskey April 23 and last Monday earned an 8-3 come-from-behind win over Hempfield, improving to 11-1 overall.

Chloe Blantz opened the McCaskey game with a solo homer and later that inning connected for her fourth grand slam of the year. Sydney Weichler went 1-1 with an RBI walk, a sac fly RBI and a grand slam. Cam Byler, Ally Raub (3 RBIs) and Julia Gerard all added two hits.

Ally Raub pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven and walking three.

Last Monday in Landisville, loose play gave Hempfield a 3-0 lead after three innings. L-S connected for its first hit of the game in the fifth and did not score until the sixth. Raub's fielder's choice plated Byler who walked. They tied the game one inning later and forged ahead with a five run fifth. Weichler came off the bench with a two-run double, and after three straight walks, Keiva Middleton singled in the last two runs of the game. She struck out a season-high 13 batters, walked three and scattered five hits.

"Sydney was the hero," said Charles. "She opened the seventh inning with a base hit, giving us momentum, and then doubled in two more to give us the lead."

The girls remained perfect in league play with Wednesday's 11-2 win over CV.
