Percussion Concert Slated

The Musical Art Society of Lancaster will sponsor a concert on Sunday, March 13, at 3 p.m. at The Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. The concert, "Drums, Cymbals, and Gongs," will feature a variety of percussion instruments, including mallet percussion, drums, timpani, orchestral percussion, cymbals, and a gong.

The concert will be performed by private students of James Martin and students he instructs from the Lancaster Academy of the Performing Arts. The program will also include select students from the Workshop for Young Performing Artists playing jazz piano accompanied by drumset.

Daniel Heslink, retired professor of percussion and former dean of Millersville University, will give a short percussion talk and demonstration. Martin is a former student of Heslink, and they performed together in various groups, including Lancaster Marimba Ensemble and Allegro.

The younger students will perform a programmatic piece called "Our Roadtrip," composed and arranged by Martin. The older ensembles will perform pieces by percussion composers Bobby Christian, Elliot Del Borgo, Mark Ford, and Billy Madison. One piece, "The Return of the Bells," was composed by Seth Lanford, one of Martin's students. Lanford and Jakob Kreibick will also perform solo works for marimba, snare drum, and timpani.

The Bachman Center is located on the campus of Homestead Village Retirement Community. Admission to the concert is by donation.
