Open House To Feature Display Of Radios

The community is invited to visit the John Cadwalader House on Sunday, Sept. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. Members of the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission will host visitors on a guided tour of its headquarters at 21 N. North Village Ave., Lionville, in the Uwchlan Township National Historic District.

Featured this month will be a display of radios on loan from the collection of Alex DeMers. This year marks DeMers' 50th year in broadcasting, including more than a decade as program manager for Philadelphia's WIOQ.

On Nov. 2, 1920, KDKA in Pittsburgh made was is known as the nation's first commercial broadcast. Locally, two stations were licensed in Philadelphia 100 years ago in 1922. The now defunct WGL was first, followed by WFI, which later became WFIL.

In recognition of this milestone, commission members decided that it would be appropriate to show off some of the more interesting radios from the mid-century era at the Cadwalader House.

Also open on the same day will be the Uwchlan Meeting House, 3 N. Village Ave., and the Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse, 9 N. Village Ave.
