O'Donnell To Portray Queen Victoria

The Arts at Millersville University will welcome back Candace O'Donnell to the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, for "Victoria's Secrets - 'He Was My All in All.'" Shows will take place on Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall.

O'Donnell will portray Queen Victoria of England and will be joined on stage by her granddaughter, Keeghan McLane, as Princess Beatrice. This is the third show at the Ware Center for O'Donnell, who previously portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln and actress Sarah Bernhardt.

"Victoria's Secrets" centers on Victoria's relationship with her husband, Prince Albert, who took over the monarchy, and in effect, ruled as king. After Albert's sudden death when Victoria was 40, Victoria devoted herself to memorializing and deifying him, which included sleeping every night under his portrait with both his dressing gown and a marble cast of his head at her side. The show includes information drawn by recent scholars from the thousands of pages of Victoria's diaries, which she began at age 8 and continued until her death.

The program will be introduced by McLane, who plays the role of Victoria's youngest child, now in her 50s. As audience participation is her trademark, O'Donnell will ask attendees to sing along with McLane to "God Save the Queen" and to return her signature royal wave.

O'Donnell is retired from teaching English at Elizabethtown College and is a nationally published author. Over the years, she has performed at a number of local theaters. She appeared in Aurora Films' "Another Harvest Moon." Most recently, she was in Theater of the Seventh Sister's "20th Century Blues," directed by Michael Swanson, which was nominated by Broadway World Central PA in 2019 for honors in four categories.

McLane, a Lancaster native, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in theater at Temple University. She is the acting finance director for Temple's Insomnia Theater organization, leading and participating in 24-hour productions twice every semester.

Effective March 1, masks are optional at Millersville University locations.
