New Year's Day meal planned

For the 11th year, Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, will host a pork and sauerkraut dinner. Takeouts only will be available on New Year's Day, Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, from 11 a.m. until sold out. The church plans to make 500 meals.

The meal includes pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, applesauce, a roll and butter and a whoopie pie. The pork is rubbed with a special blend and sits overnight before roasting so the flavors are absorbed into the meat. The church has improved its takeout process for faster service.

This fundraiser started when a young lady wanted to go to Africa on a mission trip, and over the years, it has helped youths attend various mission trips and the National Youth Gathering. Last year, the proceeds funded the free community meals held the third Friday of each month and were also used to prevent evictions and utility shut-offs.

There is a fee for the meal. For more details, call the church at 717-656-9200.
