Music series will celebrate cultural history

Enjoy live music in a historically rich setting when Music at Donegal presents two upcoming concerts.

The Celtic Martins will perform on Sunday, Feb. 11, and the Elan Ensemble will entertain on Sunday, March 10. Both concerts will begin at 3 p.m. and will be held at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy.

"The Music at Donegal concert series celebrates our cultural heritage," said Debra Ronning, who created the concert series. "We offer this to the community as part of our musical ministry." One of the concerts highlights the Celtic/Irish history of the church, which recently marked its 300th anniversary.

"The Celtic Martins bring new energy to the Celtic music and dance scene," Ronning noted. "They feature Irish and American fiddle tunes as well as numerous step dance routines."

Ronning is a member of the Elan Ensemble, with whom she plays piano. She's joined in the group by Sara Male on cello, Peter Kenote on viola and Neal Harnly as composer and pianist. The concert repertoire will include pieces by Bruch, Beethoven and Piazzolla as well as some contemporary music. "Neal Harnly will premiere an original composition," Ronning shared. "The piece is a lyrical song for cello, viola and piano."

She emphasized that the concerts are open to anyone, not just church members. "The community response has been wonderful," she said.

Founded in 1721, Donegal Presbyterian Church shares an ancestral heritage with a church in Rathneeny, Ireland. The "witness tree" that once stood on the grounds was the spot where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. The tree had to be cut down in 1991 due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more, including the case on the church's tracker organ.

The concerts will be held in the fellowship hall of the church, and all concerts are 90 minutes long with an intermission. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information on the concerts, contact Ronning at ronnindd20@gmail.com.
