Mount Joy Rotary Plans Presentation

The Rotary Club of Mount Joy will host a presentation at its lunch meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy.

Former Donegal High School (DHS) student Sarah Brallier and her former DHS history teacher, Elizabeth Lewis, will present "Beneath the Snow of the Baugnez Crossroads: Uncovering the Malmedy Massacre," based on a documentary that Brallier and a classmate, Laura Hess, created in 2013. The presentation will tell the story of Mount Joy resident Harold Billow at the WWII massacre on Dec. 17, 1944. The documentary includes interviews with Cpl. Harold Billow.

The Rotary Club of Mount Joy is raising funds for a memorial for Billow and his nine Lancaster comrades who were with him on the day of the massacre. In the massacre, 84 soldiers from across the nation were killed, including five of the 10 soldiers from Lancaster. Billow was the last living survivor of the Malmedy Massacre; he passed away on May 17, 2022. He told his story to many over the years.

Brallier and Hess' documentary, with Lewis' guidance, was prepared for a National History Day competition and placed in the top six in all of Pennsylvania.

There is a fee for the optional lunch. To make a reservation, contact Rotary president Joanne Pinkerton at 717-653-5911 or joanne@gatheringplacemj.com. Those wishing to attend only the program may arrive between 12:45 and 12:50 p.m. The program is free to attend, but reservations are requested.
