Mount Calvary Will Present "Cinderella"

We all know the story of "Cinderella," but when students at Mount Calvary Christian School present their spring musical, audiences are in for a few surprises.

"It's the traditional story of 'Cinderella,' but the characters are a lot more developed than in the animated movie," said Daniel Hess, who portrays Prince Christopher in the show. "You get to meet the royal family and the steward. You get to know the characters better."

It's also a show filled with funny moments, said Sophia Bozell, who plays Grace, one of the stepsisters.

"I think traditionally 'Cinderella' hasn't been looked at as a funny show, but this show is very funny," she said. "It has a lot of humor in it."

Mount Calvary Christian School will present "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella Enchanted Edition" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 26, 27 and 28, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on March 28. Performances will take place at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.

Sophia said it's been a lot of fun embracing a character who's a bit of a villain.

"I get to play opposite my sister, who is the other stepsister," she said of Karly Bozell, who portrays Joy. "We get to bounce off each other, and a lot of people say it's like we're not even acting because we're already sisters. We're more comedic than mean in my eyes. I like to think our characters are funny and silly rather than mean."

Like the stepsisters in the animated film, the girls will wear over-the-top, loud costumes.

"Our outfits are very obnoxious," Sophia said with a laugh. "We're definitely going to stand out."

Carly Mohr, who plays the title role, said audiences will discover there's more to the story than a girl who lost a glass slipper.

"I feel like Cinderella the character goes into every situation with kindness," she said. "In the beginning, she's unconfident in herself specifically, but really in everything. Throughout the musical, she grows her confidence through meeting people like the prince and the Fairy Godmother."

Carly noted that the theme of the show is "finding your identity."

"There are so many great characters in this show," she said. "Every age can come see it and find their favorite character."

The Fairy Godmother will be portrayed by Avalyn Hostetter, who said she's thrilled to wear the fancy costume, complete with wings.

"It has a lot of sparkles, which is right up my alley," she said. "Cover me in sparkles, and I'll be happy."

She said audiences may view the Fairy Godmother character as an older, quirky lady, but she's taking a different approach.

"I'm taking the old part out, but keeping the quirky," she said. "I'm approaching it in a whimsical way, but I'm also telling Cinderella, 'You have to believe in yourself before I can help you.'"

The musical will feature a variety of special effects on stage, highlighting the magic of Cinderella's transformation from rags to a ball gown, among other scenes.

Handmade puppets will be used for characters such as mice who become horses to take Cinderella to the ball.

The show features a cast of more than 40 students in sixth through 12th grades.

Avalyn noted that Carly is her cousin and that Daniel and Elizabeth Hess, the later of whom portrays the queen, are also siblings, so the show is full of authentic moments.

"There's a lot of fun interactions happening onstage," she said.

Daniel added that audiences can expect to be entertained throughout the entire show.

" 'The Prince Is Giving a Ball' is such a fun number," he remarked. "There's some great choreography and great music in this show."

Avalyn agreed, commenting, "There are so many cool partner lifts, ballet numbers and really great dancing. You're never going to be bored watching this show."
